Tommy May, b.1994 studied Photography at Savannah College of Art and Design. May and his partner, Gwen, founded Grey Projects LA in December 2016.
A frequent summer resident, May is a Los Angeles based artist, whose objective is portraying memories through vibrant colors and crudely drawn symbols. May works in various mediums; such as enamel, acrylic, oil, watercolor, sculpture and printmaking.
My current work explores color field techniques and automatic drawing. The process begins with various washes and stains that are inspired by many Washington Color School painters, such as Sam Gilliam and Morris Lewis. I then approach the canvas with automatic drawings. The stains act as the architecture to the painting, a matrix for marks to exist upon. The nature of my process allows me to find relationships within the paintings beyond my conscious invention.
This body of work is inspired by the colors and shapes of Martha’s Vineyard. I often use vibrant hues but for these paintings, I have chosen a more toned down palette, reflective of the island. Earth tones, blues and purples are prominent in the work.
