Gwen O’Neil (b.1992, New York) lives in Los Angeles with her partner, Tommy May. They share a painting studio in the Hollywood Hills. Ms. O’Neil graduated from Savannah College of Art and Design with a BFA in Photography.
Ms. O’Neil's bright and colorful paintings were inspired by gestural drawings she had made while traveling in Europe by train. “I was in Paris when I saw Monet’s Water Lilies at the Musee de l’Orangerie. I was mesmerized by the scale of the paintings and the delicate brushstrokes that filled them.” Ms. O’Neils paintings explore a dry brush technique of layering vivid colors upon a colored ground. Despite their chaotic qualities, the paintings are articulate in their rhythm, line, and allusions. Much like her photographs, these works are abstractions of her natural surroundings, incorporating the colors and shapes of the landscape. The paintings emulate impressionism in its most abstract form.
Ms. O’Neil shows in Los Angeles at the Salon Gallery. She has been part of group shows in Los Angeles, New York, Martha’s Vineyard, and Savannah.
