My Martha’s Vineyard By Air series is currently being represented by The Field Gallery of Martha’s Vineyard for their 2017 season.

I am married with two university aged children who are wonderful young adults.  In addition to photography, I am passionate about music, art, cycling, traveling and food and beer that is locally produced with care and love.

Martha’s Vineyard By Air ~ Vincent Chahley Photography

Artist Statement

Martha’s Vineyard has a unique combination of conservation lands, ocean beaches and fresh water shallow ponds where sand, water and low lying vegetation combine to create natural art in the earth’s landscape when seen from above.  I am attracted to the geometry, colors, shapes, lighting and shadows of aerial photography.  It is fascinating to see how a place so familiar can look so dramatic and different when the perspective is changed.  In many of the images there is a human element that provides a context or story as to how we interact together with nature on the island.

Martha’s Vineyard By Air was shot with a traditional SLR digital camera (Canon 5D Mark III with an f2.8 80-200 mm lens) out the open window of a single engine Cessna aircraft during September and October 2016.    For me the late afternoon flights were a combination of an artistic adrenaline rush and a peaceful surreal calm of flying gently above the landscape.  I have never been so excited to get home and download the results from my camera.   I would like to thank Mike Creato of Classic Aviators for being such a great pilot and partner on this photographic journey.

I have been coming to Martha’s Vineyard for over 30 years, and although my home in Canada is over 2,500 miles away I have always been drawn back to the charm and unique culture of this island.  Photography has further opened my eyes and perspective as to what a beautiful place The Vineyard is.
